My father died this month after a long and couragous battle with cancer. After years of struggle his death could not be described as unexpected. But nothing can prepare you for the loss of those you love. He gave me the support and the freedom to develop my own interests as I grew up and he was always there as a reliable and loving presence in my life. It is hard at this moment to realise that my life will continue without him. When I was trying to think what to say about Dad I wrote a list of the things that he valued throughout his childhood and adulthood. I looked at the completed list and realised that these things were of equal importance to me. My Dad was a man of many passions, skills and interests and his humour and lust for life was infectious. He taught me many things; to value education, to be independent, to be patient, to find my strengths and interests in life and to then develop and enjoy them. He also taught me the joy of good whisky and eating four chocolates at one go. And, of course, how to locate the North Star from wherever I might be in the world. For this and for so much more I thank him. All these things I shall pass on to my son, Atticus. My memories will tell my son what a lovely man his Grandad was. Someone so loved is never forgotten. I want to thank my sister and brother-in-law for all they have done for my parents. In the week after Dad’s passing Alan came straight round when Mum called him- ready to fix the heating- something she and dad would always have done together. It is hard to live at a distance from family, but it is greatly reassuring to know that Sylvia and Alan are so close to mum at this time and I thank them for all their care and consideration.
